Update #167 - Mac and Linux status + Refunds
about 6 years ago
– Wed, Feb 12, 2020 at 01:16:03 AM
Hi all,
Here is an update on the status of the Mac/Linux builds and the refunds.
We wanted to wait until all the builds were live and ready before sending an update.
Linux - Steam - The build is live!
Linux - GOG - The build is live!
MAC - Steam - The build is live!
MAC- GOG - Unfortunately, there will be no build on GOG on Mac as we cannot get it to work.
As for the refunds, we cannot reverse the charges on a card that is 5 years old, it would be too risky. So we will be sending you an email where we will be asking you your Paypal account and we will process them individually. Please wait until we send you the email so we can have everything in one place and keep track of everybody. Stay tuned for it!
Thanks again for your patience and we hope that you'll enjoy the game.
As usual, if you have any questions, let us know!

Linux and Mac update
– Tue, Nov 12, 2019 at 12:13:23 AM
Hi everyone,
Compulsion here with an update for our Linux and Mac backers.
When we launched our Kickstarter, we promised Mac and Linux versions of the game. After spending over a year of development on the Linux and Mac versions, we still haven’t reached a quality level that we are comfortable with. We no longer plan to release or sell these versions officially on stores: however, in an effort to hold up to our promise to you as backers, we are doing a limited Linux or Mac release just for you, alongside providing you with a full refund.
In 2015, We Happy Few was a much smaller game than what it became today. Most of you know our story: the game gained a lot of attention and we decided to shoot for the stars and expand it to meet the sudden expectations the world now had of us. This also made the Mac and Linux versions much harder to optimize and deliver at our quality standards.
So what does this mean for you as a backer? First, we apologize for taking so long trying to fulfill this promise. Second, we will be refunding all our Mac and Linux backers. Third, you are still getting the game on your platform!
The Steam/GOG codes you have already received are yours to keep, and you will be able to access the Mac/Linux beta branches on Steam.
However, you should be aware that for the same PC specifications, the Linux and Mac versions will likely run at lower frame-rates than the Windows version of the game.
The beta branch version for Linux runs natively, although you can opt for the Proton version too, which currently is performing slightly better than the native version.
Here is a tl;dr
We are refunding Linux and Mac backers due to the lateness of the fulfillment and because the Linux and Mac Port are not meeting the performance standards we feel comfortable selling.
Expect to see a refund within the next few weeks.
Linux and Mac backers are keeping their Steam codes and will still have access to the Windows version, and can play the unofficial Mac/Linux versions on beta branches (Linux players will be able to play it once 1.9 arrives. Mac soon to follow).
We will not sell/advertise the game for Linux and Mac.
Thanks for reading. As usual, we are here to answer any questions you may have!

Update #165 - Arcade Mode and Update 1.7!
– Fri, Mar 22, 2019 at 06:19:56 PM
Hi everyone,
We Happy Few 1.7, including the new Arcade Mode, will be coming to all platforms on Monday March 25th!
In the distant past, during our Kickstarter campaign in 2015, we promised that we would build additional modes for We Happy Few - at the time, loosely titled Sandbox and Wellie Mode - and we have been working on what this would look like since launch. Today we are excited to finally present you: Arcade Mode!
Arcade Mode is a free game update for We Happy Few which contains not two, but three new modes that will showcase a different part of the We Happy Few experience: Survival, Night’s Watch and Sandbox.
Survival
Survival is a return to the Early Access survival experience. As its name suggests, Survival mode is all about surviving in a harsh and unforgiving world, and is designed for those of you who enjoyed the survival experience in the past. You will need to hunt for food, water and shelter, and you’ll need to use all of the stealth, crafting, and combat skills at your disposal to last as long as you can in Wellington Wells. Scoring is based on survival time but to keep things mysterious and exciting, there is also a way to escape the island.
Night’s Watch
Have you ever wondered how it would feel to give a jolly good thrashing to those pesky Downers? In Night’s Watch (formally called Wellie Mode), we bring to life one of the most requested characters by the community, allowing you to play as the most notorious Bobby, Constable Constable. As a constable, and a man of high duty, you’ll need to keep all the filthy Downers out of town through fast paced combat while making sure you do not run out of Joy. Each night will become increasingly harder as hordes of Downers start pouring around town. Upgrade your weapons, take your Joy and keep the streets Downer free! All with a great big smile on your face.
Sandbox
Sandbox is a non-narrative/non-goal based game mode, which allows you to experiment with our world generation systems and gameplay options. This isn’t a skill based mode rather than a calmer experience, designed for players who want the freedom to create their own version Wellington Wells. So, if you’d like to pile 50 corpses in a bathtub, or see a very unusual procedurally generated world, this might be for you. With a whole arsenal of cheats at your disposal, chaos in this mode knows no bounds.
Update 1.7 and other stuff
Update 1.7 will drop on Monday March 25th for Steam, UWP, PS4 and Xbox One.
Along with Arcade Mode, Update 1.7 will contain an array of bug fixes and improvements for We Happy Few.
Along with these additions and fixes, Update 1.7 also includes the infrastructure (eg the menu option) that we need to deliver the Season Pass DLC. We're very close now to talking more about the first DLC. Stay tuned for more info soon!
Finally, we have just about fulfilled the last of our Kickstarter requirements. With Arcade Mode coming out, we’ve completed all our project stretch goals! We’re just about finished with the final physical rewards, including the final parts of the collector’s box. Thank you all for your patience.
Patch notes to come.

Update #164 - New year, DLC update and future plans
about 7 years ago
– Wed, Feb 13, 2019 at 01:28:15 AM
Hi all,
It’s been a while since we last wrote a post - we’ve been hard at work on patching, DLC and figuring out what we’re doing next.
As everybody knows by now, last year we were brought into the Microsoft family as a first party studio! This is the biggest thing to ever happen to us, and quite frankly, we couldn’t be more excited for the future and all the possibilities it holds. We already wrote quite a bit about it so if you are interested in it, you can head here to read the blog post.
And then on August 10, after 4.5 years of tears, sweat and love, we finally launched We Happy Few. To say that We Happy Few had an unconventional development cycle would be an understatement - we started with 5 people (2014), showed the game a year into development (2015), Kickstarter (2015), Early Access (2016), publishing (2017) and finally launched this year. We’ve shared quite a lot of the behind the scenes of our development throughout the years through weekly updates, and we are always happy to talk about it with you. We think it’s important to explain and give nuances about what happens during game development, so feel free to keep asking us.
Being a Game Preview/Early Access title means that throughout the years the game kept evolving and improving thanks to the community’s continuous feedback. At launch, a lot of you kept that mindset and reached out to help us narrow down the most harrowing issues and for this we are really grateful, we have since we released 4 updates and are currently working on the 5th one which will contain our most fixes yet. Doing open development on a narrative game was quite intricate, during Early Access most people were unhappy thinking we had no story but as you now know, we were just careful with it as to not reveal any spoilers. After we launched the game, we received a tremendous amount of comments about the story which made it all worth it. We are so glad that you enjoyed the story.
Future plans
Once we launched the game, the programming team stayed on the main game to polish it and release updates while the rest of the team went into small groups to work on the DLCs. The team has been hard at work on them for the past few months, which is why we have been quiet about it, but we won’t remain quiet forever. Maybe even Weekly Journals might make a return, like we used to.
We do have some remaining Kickstarter promises to fulfill. These include sandbox mode, and Mac and Linux versions. We currently have a running Linux version that has been available for testing since the new year. We are also looking for development partners for the Mac version, as we are not Mac specialists. We understand this is taking longer than anticipated and we appreciate the patience with this; having a more solid core game (particularly on the optimization side) was critical before getting to work on these two versions. Sandbox is coming to the end of its development, and we’ll be sharing what this is soon.
We are also super excited about the coming Season Pass content, as this is an opportunity for the team to have fun and run wild with crazy ideas, while also celebrating some of the fan’s favorite characters from the main game. We hope you’re going to love them.
We’re still a small team and are doing these DLCs ourselves. What this means is that we proceed through pre production on each update with a small team, then go into production with the full team when it’s ready - and this can take time. We want to get these right, and we very much appreciate everyone’s patience. This is where each update is currently at:
Sandbox is in the final stages of tweaking and QA, and will be the next major patch after 1.6 (1.7, probably). We’ll be talking about these game modes shortly, as they will provide different experiences to what you currently see in Wellington Wells.
They Came From Below is mostly content complete, and we’re currently reviewing/polishing up what we’ve built in production.
Lightbearer is full steam ahead in production.
We All Fall Down is in pre-production.
As usual, if you have any questions about anything, let us know and we’ll be more than happy to respond.
